I am so glad to hear this, and i am even more happy to write a post on this. Yes, throw vista operating system and go for open source ubuntu. It is free, including shipping and is amazing.
You should also try out the KDE version of the ubuntu, called the kubuntu. It is ultra cool with its aqua interface and no operating system can match that.
In a featured article by mythbuster, he quotes that vista comes with a lot of unnecessary software which he will probably never use. And also suggests ubuntu.
